Meesho’s focus on Women Empowerment

There has been a huge rise in the number of startups in India in recent years. Innovative products and business models have transformed people’s rise drastically. Meesho founded by Vidit Aatrey is one such company that aims at aiding MSMEs across the country to get benefitted from digitalization and its tools.

Meesho is a social commerce platform that facilitates individuals to set up online stores with zero investment. It is one of the largest reselling apps in India. Being a social commerce platform, apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have largely contributed towards the growth of Meesho.

Meesho, during its initial days, spotted that women were keen on finding ways to earn money and be independent. As most women were already using social media apps, it became easy for Meesho to create a sustainable and perfect business model.

Now, Meesho has achieved great heights and scaled its business model to enable MSMEs and resellers to connect with potential buyers PAN India. Many mothers, homemakers, students, etc. have launched their own online business and started to sell their products across different categories.

The year 2020 was the toughest for the company and its women entrepreneurs. To support the women entrepreneurs, the company asked them to make masks which were later bought by Meesho thereby providing a stream of revenue for them. Meesho also helped them by providing small loans. They also reduced their commissions massively. 

As the pandemic restrictions were lifted, Meesho gained its original momentum back and accelerated its growth. It witnessed 20 – 30 percent more business than the pre-COVID times. Many new users joined Meesho and started their business for the first time.

During the past first years, Meesho has created as many as 10 million entrepreneurs of which most of them are women. In the future, Meesho is expected to foster entrepreneurship in the minds of many other women and help them earn and establish their identity.
